How it all started…

It all begins with an idea.

So I have this chair. You know, the one from your Grandma’s house that you just can’t part with. It’s the chair that sits in the corner of the basement covered with a blanket. It eventually makes its way to the garage where all things go to die. I told my husband “We need to keep it! I will recover it.”

After 20 more episodes of Flea Market Flip and how to videos on You Tube, it happened…I found “The Dumpster Chair!”  There she was, hanging halfway out of a dumpster. He lines were gorgeous, her seat was disintegrating, but I was going to save her. My daughter was mortified. I pulled the chair from the dumpster while my daughter pretended she didn’t know me. When we got to our garage, I removed her rain soaked seat. I left her there to dry and started to look for the right fabric for a Chinoiserie chair.

I lightly sanded the chair once she dried out. I used tack cloth to remove all the dust and little bits. The chair had been orange at one point, then white. I chose Rustoleum 2X, a “paint and primer in one.” Canyon Black satin. Yes, spray paint. I sprayed three coats, with light sanding followed by tack cloth in between. I topped it all off with some clear coat, Rustoleum clear coat in satin. Now it was time for foam, batting and fabric.

I found the absolute perfect fabric, Robert Allen Neo Toile in Coral. I chose a high density foam for the seat, with a cushion wrap over the top of that. Then I put the fabric on—backwards. Once I fixed that little error, the chair looked fabulous! It’s still a favorite of mine.

My grandma’s chair is still in the garage. That’s a story for another day.

It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

Don’t worry about sounding professional. Sound like you. There are over 1.5 billion websites out there, but your story is what’s going to separate this one from the rest. If you read the words back and don’t hear your own voice in your head, that’s a good sign you still have more work to do.

Be clear, be confident and don’t overthink it. The beauty of your story is that it’s going to continue to evolve and your site can evolve with it. Your goal should be to make it feel right for right now. Later will take care of itself. It always does.
